Mohamed Salah went from traveling long distances from a small Egyptian village to attend training sessions to becoming a global star and Egypt’s ultimate football icon. His story is an example of sacrifice, discipline, and perseverance.

A boy from Nagrig who dreamed of making it big

Long before becoming one of the biggest stars in world football. Mohamed Salah grew up in Nagrig, a small rural village in Egypt’s Nile Delta. It was there that he developed a passion for football, playing in the streets with friends and family.

From a very young age, he stood out for his speed, skill, and determination. Local coaches began to notice his talent, and soon an opportunity emerged that would change his life: joining the youth academy of Arab Contractors, one of Egypt’s most important professional clubs.

The journeys of up to nine hours that shaped his teenage years

The opportunity to play for Arab Contractors also required enormous sacrifice. The club was located near Cairo, far from his home, meaning Salah had to make daily trips of up to four and a half hours each way, taking several buses just to reach training sessions.

It was an exhausting routine for a teenager. He even significantly reduced the time he spent at school in order to meet his football commitments.

However, quitting was never an option. His goal was to become a professional footballer, and every journey strengthened his determination to achieve that dream.

The move to Europe and the beginning of an international career

His hard work began to pay off when he made his professional debut for Arab Contractors while still a teenager. His talent quickly caught the attention of European clubs, and in 2012 he signed for Swiss side Basel.

That transfer marked the beginning of an international career that would later take him to clubs such as Chelsea, Fiorentina, and Roma. Although he faced difficult moments, especially during his time at Chelsea in England, Salah continued working hard to prove his true quality.

His experience in Italy was crucial in establishing himself as one of Europe’s most dangerous attacking players.

The King of Liverpool and Egypt’s biggest star

In 2017 came the moment that permanently transformed his career. Liverpool placed their trust in him, and Salah responded with one of the most impressive seasons in recent Premier League history.

His goals, assists, and leadership quickly made him an Anfield idol. With the Reds, he won major titles such as the Champions League and the Premier League while also breaking numerous scoring records.

At the same time, he became the standout figure of the Egyptian national team and the most influential footballer the country has produced in recent decades.

Much more than a footballer for Egypt

His humble background, discipline, and connection with ordinary people have made him a cultural symbol both inside and outside Egypt. Every time he wears the Pharaohs’ jersey, he carries the expectations of an entire nation that views him as an inspiration for future generations.

As the 2026 FIFA World Cup approaches, Salah remains the leading figure of Egyptian football and proof that the biggest dreams can begin in a small village in the Nile Delta.
