Senegalese oil executive Moussa Diao has led a management buyout of Swiss-based energy company Oryx Energies in a transaction valued at approximately US$1 billion, securing control of one of Africa’s major independent fuel trading and distribution businesses.

Diao, the company’s chief executive officer, partnered with trading manager Hervé Bouvet to acquire a majority stake from the group’s existing shareholders, including founder Jean-Claude Gandur, according to reports by Bloomberg and Africa Intelligence.

The transaction marks a significant ownership shift for Oryx, transferring control from its founder-led ownership structure to executives who have spent years managing its operations across African markets.

The deal also ends a rival acquisition bid by American-Burkinabé financier Simon Tiemtoré, chairman of Lilium Capital, who had sought to acquire the company’s African fuel distribution assets.

Moussa Diao, Chief Executive Officer of Oryx Energies (Oryx Energies); Simon Tiemtoré, Founder and Chairman of Lilium Group (Lilium Capital).

Strategic foothold in Africa’s energy market

Headquartered in Geneva, Oryx Energies operates across the petroleum supply chain, including fuel procurement, international trading, storage, transport and distribution.

The company supplies petrol, diesel, liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), lubricants and marine fuels to customers across the continent.

Its operations span more than 30 African countries, with established businesses in 17 markets. The group operates more than 410 service stations and 11 major terminals, with storage capacity approaching one million cubic metres.

Oryx sells approximately 9.4 million tonnes of petroleum products annually and employs more than 1,800 people.

West Africa is a key market, with operations in Senegal, Côte d’Ivoire, Benin, Togo, Mali, Burkina Faso, Guinea, Sierra Leone and Mauritania.

The company’s infrastructure includes the Bargny terminal in Senegal, an important asset supporting fuel imports and distribution in the West African market.

The scale of the business gives its new owners control over a substantial network of energy infrastructure and distribution channels in economies where imported petroleum products remain critical to transport, industry and electricity generation.

Diao’s rise to the top

Diao has spent more than two decades at Oryx Energies, having joined the business in 1999 as a junior trader before taking on senior responsibilities in its African operations.

He became chief executive in February 2019, following experience developing the company’s businesses in markets including Benin and Côte d’Ivoire.

He is the son of the late Senegalese oil and gas businessman Abdoulaye “Baba” Diao, a prominent figure in the country’s petroleum industry.

His acquisition of a controlling stake represents a transition from executive management to ownership, giving him a direct financial interest in the company’s future growth and performance.

The buyout also places a senior African executive at the helm of a major energy distribution group whose operations are concentrated on the continent, although the transaction does not, by itself, establish that ownership has transferred to African investors collectively.

Rival bid falls through

The management buyout follows an unsuccessful attempt by Tiemtoré’s Lilium Capital to acquire Oryx’s African operations.

According to reports, the proposed transaction would have given the investment group control of approximately 400 service stations, alongside the company’s commercial fuel, LPG and lubricants businesses.

The negotiations collapsed, clearing the way for Diao and Bouvet to pursue their management-led acquisition.

The failed bid follows an earlier unsuccessful attempt by Tiemtoré to acquire a 61.4% stake in regional banking group Oragroup, which operated across West and Central Africa.

The outcome of the Oryx transaction highlights competition among investors seeking to secure strategic assets in Africa’s energy and financial services sectors.

Despite its extensive infrastructure and continental footprint, Oryx operates in a market exposed to volatile international oil prices, currency pressures, shipping costs and geopolitical disruptions.

Many African countries depend heavily on imported refined petroleum products, leaving businesses and consumers vulnerable to changes in global energy markets.

For Oryx, maintaining reliable supplies while managing procurement costs, logistics and competition will remain central to its performance.

The new owners will also need to sustain investment in storage and distribution infrastructure while navigating different regulatory and operating environments across their markets.
