Congo-Brazzaville moves to scrap visas for Africans

By Kelvin Jakachira

The Republic of Congo has taken a major step towards introducing visa-free entry for citizens of all African countries, with the government approving a bill to remove entry visa requirements from January 1, 2027.

The proposed reform, however, will not mean unrestricted entry, as authorities intend to retain measures to monitor migration and strengthen border security.

The Cabinet approved the bill in October, advancing a pledge announced by President Denis Sassou Nguesso during Africa Day celebrations in Brazzaville on May 25, 2026.

The legislation must still be examined and adopted by Parliament before the proposed changes can take effect, according to reports on the development.

The bill seeks to amend the country’s existing legislation governing the entry, residence and departure of foreign nationals, including provisions introduced under laws passed in 1996 and amended in 2017.

Under the proposed changes, African nationals would no longer need to obtain entry visas to visit the Central African nation, potentially easing travel for business, tourism, education and cultural exchanges.

Brazzavile

However, visa exemption will not eliminate border controls. The government intends to strengthen mechanisms for monitoring migration flows and addressing irregular immigration, while tackling cross-border crime, human trafficking, migrant smuggling and organised criminal networks.

The move is part of wider efforts to promote continental integration and improve the movement of people across Africa, where visa requirements and other administrative barriers continue to complicate travel between countries.

Announcing the initiative in May, Sassou Nguesso said African nationals would be able to enter the country without visas from January 1, 2027, subject to limited administrative and security provisions.

The announcement was made as African leaders and development partners gathered in Brazzaville for the African Development Bank Group’s 2026 Annual Meetings, which coincided with Africa Day celebrations.

The Congolese president called on African governments to move beyond narrow national interests and deepen cooperation to advance the continent’s development.

The policy would place Congo-Brazzaville among a growing number of African countries easing entry requirements for fellow Africans, in line with broader ambitions to improve mobility and expand intra-African trade.

Visa restrictions have long been identified as an obstacle to regional commerce, tourism and investment, particularly for entrepreneurs and small businesses seeking to operate across national borders.

By easing entry requirements, Congo hopes to strengthen its links with other African economies and encourage greater movement of businesspeople, investors and visitors.

The initiative also aligns with the objectives of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), which seeks to expand trade among African countries by reducing barriers to the movement of goods and supporting a more integrated continental market.
